My first New Years in Sydney. I was fortunate enough to have an invitation from Joe and Mimi to join them at their apartment in Neutral bay for dinner and the fireworks. After 4 days at Surf Camp in Gerroa, it was nice to have a low key evening with delicious home made food. Most of the roads around Circular Quay had been shut down to car traffic but were packed with pedestrians. Everyone was trying to get somewhere before public transport shut and the area became too congested to move.
I really love the ferry rides around the harbor. Aside from the bridge and the opera house, the harbor is juts so beautiful. It looked like they created mooring areas for boats all along the headlands of the harbor making it look like huge boat parking lots which by nightfall were twinkling and looked like a little village.
The fireworks were wicked cool. They had them going off form 4 or 5 different locations + the tops of buildings in the CBD and the bridge. Not as good as the fireworks at the summer festivals in Osaka, but still pretty cool. And with the city of Sydney in the background, it was definitely worth watching.
I also discovered a new post-new years activity. Finding people who are passed out drunk in the park or around the city and taking ridiculous pictures with them. Seems like folks were really getting into it.
